Remove Windows.old folder

When we do upgrade Windows from an old new version. Few files contents in this folder will show is in use. The old version of Windows few system files still exists in Windows.old folder. As per system inbuilt policy, such old files will get deleted / removed within 28 days. But if you are looking for instant removal of Windows.old folder to extend system space. Use Disk Cleanup to remove this folder.

Use of Disk Cleanup

  1. Open control panel by pressing windows key of the keyboard. Or Press Windows+R and type Control panel in command prompt. Control panel of windows will display with tools and control icons
  2. In the Control Panel search box, type Admin, click Administrative Tools, and in next product list, you have to look for Disk Cleanup icon double click on it. Go through Screenshot.
  3. Next box will ask you to choose a drive, select the drive. Suggested to choose C drive where Windows on, and then tap or click OK.
  4. In the Disk Cleanup dialogue, tap or click Clean up system files. Select Windows.old folder / files.
  5. A message will popup, for option to click Delete files.

  • Delete/ Remove temporary files from the system:
    • Open Disk cleanup tool from the control panel.
    • Select the drive you want to clean up, and then select OK.
    • Under Files to delete, select the file types which you want to remove. There will be also available file type and description.
    • Select OK.
  • Advance Disk Cleanup – free up more space, you can also delete system files and apps files:
    • In Disk Cleanup, select Clean up system files. you can remove Windows.old folder also.
    • Select the particular system file types for removal. recommended checking the descriptions of the file before the removal process.
    • Select OK that is.

Precautions to use of Disk Cleanup tool

Before you use Disk Cleanup, make sure that all of your files and settings are up to to the mark. And your upgraded windows is working perfectly. Once you run this too it will remove / delete the the Windows.old folder permanently. You will not able to undo / recover those files again.
